The link from chrisx has some good infor but I'll add my 2 cents.
Dad's a vet and mom's got allergies so we've had this dicussion before. The key is to find a breed which does not shed much, as any shedding from the dog will cause more problems than anything else. Breeds which don't shed (for examples poodles) are good for this. We have always had australian sheppards which shed in clumps and make it easy to clean the hair up.
