I did some looking into this for a class I had along time ago and I remember specifically not finding any wells that were shut down because they were unprofitable. What I did find is that oil was stock piled in waiting for higher market prices. This all could be wrong as I was a sophmore in college at the time and may not have understood it clearly, but this is what I wrote my paper on and I did get an "A" on it.
As to other sources, are you alluding to oil exploration in ANWR? If this is the case, then I totally disagree but not from an environmental protection standpoint, though that is the icing on the cake.
I personally think the answer is in synthetic fuels, such as coal gasification, ethanol and bio-diesel rather than importation or "other sources". The technology will improve soon so that replication is very good. I would like to see oil companies invest more of their profits into these ventures.
I have been thinking and reading about this subject today. I don't think oil companies are evil and I understand how this has happened, I just can't believe how out of balance it is.
