Not that anyone will likely read this now anyways, but...
I am opposed to ANWR not because of the environmental concerns, though they are certainly valid and I hate to see legislators go back on their word; I mean this land was set aside for a reason. The reason why I am against ANWR is because it is going to be a huge subsidized waste of time, money and natural resources. Most sources agree that we have no idea how much oil is there and what ever is there will be hard to get and won't make much difference in our importation volume anyways. The U.S. government is going to subsidize oil companies on this explorative venture with what most agree will have minimal returns, so really what is the point. I do agree that economicially it would be really good for the native residents but its overall contribution to the nation would be nill, while costing us lots of money. Its just short sighted to believe that drilling for oil there would make any difference and therefore it just shouldn't be done.
I do agree with you about the illegitemacy of windfall profits as well as their ileffects and negative conotations. But on this same subject it is really bothersome how large companies escape their tax burdens, it seems that you are a fool to pay taxes in this country these days.
