This is Saabnet after all what answer did you think you'd get ;P
I hear where you're coming from, my Dad was a 240/850 driver back in the day so Swedish cars are in my blood. Saabs are more reliable and safer than ever now, even if they're not quite the blocks of Swedish steel you remember from the 80's. I bought a used 2002 9-3 hatchback in '05 after owning two "classic" 900s. It was a huge step forward in comfort, luxury and performance and I haven't really looked back. So far it's been quite reliable and with proper maintainance (something I'm sure you understand from your Volvo years) I expect to own it for a very long time.
Wife, job, and money willing I'm hoping to pick up Saab #4 next year... a new 9-3 SportCombi. It's hands down a cooler car than the v40 and probably the safest small wagon on the road.
Good luck with your descision, I'm sure you'll be happy with the car. Be sure to report back with pictures of your new ride!
