they are absolutely wonderful cars, but go in knowing all you can and take the steps to make sure you get a good one. Pay special attention to service history. Like any Euro car they need a fair bit of maintenance and it pays to wait for one that has a good history. I looked 2 years for my '96 9K and about 6 mos for our '03 9-5 SW.
If you can afford it, buy a CPO car so you have additional warranty protection. If not a CPO, then one with a *good* aftermarket extended warranty. I recommend this with ANY MAKE used car these days, as there seems like a lot happens after the original factory warranty goes away. I had one on my '96 9000 that was well worth it and we bought a CPO 9-5.
Saabs are a lot more fun than Volvos (I had a '91 940T Wagon), just as safe and get better mileage. Overall I think they are less expensive to own.
