I had myself talked into an auto when after I started shopping...mainly because manuals are hard to find. Saabs in general are not all that prevalent in my area! Also just wanted to be happy with a new/used car and a manual so I had to do some positive reinforcing to accept an auto if I ended up with one.

We drove 150 miles to look at 9-5 Aeros. They had a manual and auto...virtually identical. Test drove both and the question resurfaced. My only hesitation was that the manual had a funky interior smell (combo of scented shampoo and some nasty fruity air freshener smell).

In the end I took the manual. The driving experience IMHO was no comparison. The paddle shifters just didn't cut it, especially downshifting which was really jerky if not in the right rpm range. Also I like knowing where the powerband is and with an auto, I just wasn't sure "when" things would kick in. HOWEVER the auto is silky smooth and the 'sport' setting is awesome. If I hadn't found a manual, I would have been happy with an Auto.

Where are you looking? What years? New/used? There are some manual 03-05 in the Chicagoland area. I'm not a dealer so I'm not trying to push anything...just being helpful.

Good luck

Nate
