I think that a manual driver might be more engaged, and perhaps all else being equal is less likely to have an accident. However, I don’t think all else is equal. I would suggest that manual drivers are much more likely to be performance oriented and/or own sportier cars and thus are more likely to drive aggressively of test the limits of their cars. I would also suspect that the average manual driver is younger (has an economy car or places more emphasis on sporty performance) and is thus in a more accident prone demographic.

I think I agree with your supposition, but I don’t think the aggregate statistics would side with the manual driver.
