Sure a truck is a different situation with more complex shift patterns, (great graphic by the way), and no synchronizers, but the principle is the same. Even with an automobile driver who may not be as experienced, even a 5 spd automotive synchronized transmission can cause issues in an emergency situation. Ask a human factors specialist and she/he will tell you that we can only handle so many tasks at one time. An experienced driver may be better at handling steering / gas / clutch / brake in an evasive maneuver compared to someone inexperienced, but even experts screw up sometimes.

I presume that you haven't been in a situation in which you life flashed before your eyes. Perhaps in that case, all logic and control flies out the window(?) although I don't know if anybody can say for sure. An automatic tranny and computer doesn't know or care how threatened you are and it probably does what's best 99% of the time. Stability control saves lives by similar logic.

I'm not faulting the manual transmission, and better driver training would certainly help but human error causes most accidents and taking more human out of the equation makes vehicles safer.

(By the way, I drive a manual tranny car and an automatic tranny car.)
