Yes the pardigm is flawed...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 28 Nov 2006 13:27:27 In Reply to: manual vs automatic, quinn reagan, Tue, 28 Nov 2006 06:28:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The problem is that a "normal" old Saaber woundn't have anything to do with previous Saab slush boxes, i.e. the 3 speed in a 900S was a terrible auto. Even the 4 speed boxes in the 9000 and finally the 4 speed Aisin Warner in the NG900-OG9-3 where classic automatics, though the sport button in the Aisin warner might and I emphasize might, keep a stick shift guy from going crazy.
The new 5 speed autos in the 9-3SS and the 9-5s are entirely different, especially the 9-3SS auto. Many, many previously die hard stick fans have found that the 5 speed slap shifter in a 9-3SS works darn good. Unlike Tiptronic and other slap shift systems the 9-3SS box won't automatically upshift at redline plopping you into too high of a gear when you least expect it. Heck the 9-3 Aeros are 6 speed autos with steering wheel mounted paddles, me I prefer slapping it in the manual gate on the stick as my shift brain is wired to my arm, not my thumbs.
In general high torque Saab turbos are especially well suited to automatics, and any modern auto has a lock up torque converter and overdrive so the stick fuel economy advantage is almost nil lately.
But shift if you will. Save the $1,350, which you'll make back in resale anyway, and Saab shifters are better than ever and availible across the line, save for the 9-7X.
So my suggestion is to try a serious test drive on your favorite road. Don't poo-poo the modern auto until you seriously work one out. It'll change your paradigm. You can still prefer the stick, but the modern Saab 9-3SS auto can make pushing in the clutch pedal a thing of the past.
