Not a day goes by that I don't complain about printers. For my entire professional career as "the computer guy" printers have been the bane of my existence. If it's not clogged heads or crappy toner it's trays that don't select right and rollers that either pull no paper or half of the tray's supply. It's terrible. My dad had a Laserjet IIP he bought in 1986 or something and used it for 15 years. The thing worked great, never a problem. I spend countless thousands on fully-optioned HP 4200s and can't get two reliable years.
For whatever it's worth, I second the Brother recommendation for a home printer. Assuming you can find a good, local source for ink or toner, everyone I've dealt with in the past two or three years has been very solid.
For business, I've had excellent luck with Lexmark's lasers, but I've heard horrible stories from a number of people who've not been so fortunate. It's possible I've lucked out, but IBM used to make a great printer and my experience is that Lexmark solo has carried on the tradition...
For inkjets in general, I'd recommend checking out Meritline.com for supplies. I have long touted the necessity of buying OEM factory supplies, but I too got sick of paying $70 to replace the ink in my $150 printer. With Meritline's help, I've been using my Epson R300 for three years, and paying on average $12 to refill all six cartridges. I can't detect a real difference in print quality, and have had no issues with leaks, runs, drips, or clogged heads. They've been great. I just keep my eyes out for sales (like, buy 1 get 1 free...) and stock up then.
Won't we all be happy when everything can be done electronically and we can stop wasting our time on this crap? I'm sure the trees will be happy, too...
