You bring up a couple of good points that others may have mentioned (but I didn't read all this thread is taking off) and that is duty cycle. Most all of the Ink Jet and other liquid ink printers are much lower duty cycle that the toner type laser printers. The advantages to the Jet type printers is that you do not have to have lots of memory in the printer to process a busy page of text or photography and color is possible for a fraction of the price of disub printers or color laser. The capability to print busy or pages with lots high quality fonts and imbedded photos requires MB of ram. Ram used to cost more and most printers had the ability to add in memory, but there is usually a maximum (just like Motherboards) and the industry moved to something that could make use the the computer's memory for graphic intensive stuff. But a low cost laser BW printer does a great job on BW pages, the stuff that is usually printed, and their duty cycle is usually higher. There are just less moving parts! So if you are pumping reams of paper through your printer be sure and check it's intended duty cycle to see if you are in bounds; and you aren't keep those requirements in mind as you shop for your next printer.
As another posted, it truely is razor blades and handles. the printers have gotten extremely inexpensive to purchase, but the ink is where they make the money. I've tried the re-ink products and always gone back to buying new. I now pay close attention to the cartrige costs AND the amount of product in the cart. My old trusty HP6122 carts cost more but the capacity is significantly higher. I may go back to reloading in on the BW cart yet!
