Just let the snow pile up over 12 inches and you will figure out why. But hey, that is my humble opinion. I have 3 rows in my 2003 Durango, and I am quite happy with the purchase after almost 2 years. In New York City's pot holes, the SUV with 31 inch tires way beats out any minivan. I don't need to avoid most pot holes. I just drive through them. Do that with a minivan.
I also go 4 wheeling on the beach with my 4WD. Soon (well 6 months from now) I will be driving on frozen lakes in Canada. I would not trust a minivan for that stuff.
Now, if you live in areas with good roads and never plan on doing recreational driving, go for the minivan. The mileage will be better by 30-50 percent. AWD minivans will not get mileage as good as FWD or RWD, but supposedly offer added safety in snow and rain.
Best of luck,
C
