...How much energy goes into making an incandescent? Then, how much more is consumed to make a replacement bulb every time the darned thing blows out 2-4 times per year. There is also gasoline involved to buy the new bulbs because your wife cleaned and the spare bulbs are no longer in the place they are supposed to be.
Now, look at flourescents. They cost almost the same at the price club and Home Despot and Ikea. They last about 2-3 years in my house, and if I need to dim them I just unscrew a few in the fixture.
CFL's also do not get very hot, so I am not afraid of closet fires.
Changing to a new technology will always have its detractors, yet I think the convenience and longevity and efficiency of CFL and LED bulbs far outweigh any potential differences and downsides.
My $0.02. Your wattage may differ.
