I have a tracklight that uses r20 (smaller flood) shaped 120v bulbs. They tend not to last too long either.

I was at home depot the other day to get a couple replacement bulbs. I had one burnt out and no spares. I like to keep 2 spares. The incandescent bulbs were $8 and the CFL were $6. I ended up getting a couple CFLs. We will see traditional bulbs get more expensive as volume drops unfortunately.

I'm sure they will last longer than what they replace, and I will appreciate the energy savings.

They look good to the eye, but existing light photography does suffer a bit under CFLs. I can white balance off white objects OK, but the spectrum is not complete or very even, so some colors are distorted a bit, resulting in poor skin/hair rendition. I'm a bit of a photo snob. So, half my lights are still incandescent in the house, so I can take photos without a flash.

My garage is all CFL, and I put in 3x as many fixtures, knowing I can get a lot more light for the energy buck. More light in a garage is a good thing. I think I have 18 ceiling fixtures in my 30x40 garage now. (and windows and skylights)

At work, we are of course interested in being good financial decision makers, and it's easy to justify energy efficiency. power is about $.16/kwh on the mainland and $0.30-0.50 on local islands. We spend more money running our computers and networking gear than buying computer/networking hardware. It makes sense to go upgrade things with power consumption as a major decision making factor. Not only do we save on power use, we get longer runtime from batteries and generators.
