Information provided in the above post may be out of date or misleading.

EXPOSED OUTDOORS: CFL's can be successfully used outdoors if the following 2 manufacturer statements/guidelines are followed: a) the starting temperature must be a minimum of -20 degrees, and b) an enclosed fixture is recommended for outdoor use. Experience: my 2 CFL's have been reliably working outdoors for a year.

TIGHT FIXTURES: Heat dispersed by CFL's is approximately 1/4 that of comparable incandescent bulbs. Physical space requirements are similar. I'm not sure what I'm missing here.

DIMMERS: GE and Philips both offer dimmable CFL's; many other CFL manufacturers now offer this feature on their products.

TIMERS: Intermatic (sold in Home Depot) makes battery operated electronic timers that work with CFL's. Unlike older timers that depended on current flow through an incandescent bulb filament, these battery operated timers offer features like automatic changes for DST, dynamic compensation for changing sunrise/sunset times, compensation for latitude, and continued operation through power outages. Experience: I've installed 2 for outdoor CFL's that come on at sunset and off at sunrise....and have enjoyed 1 year of reliable operation.
