It could be that cooling or warming could both happen just in different places. The term "global warming" is too generic, IMHO, and is overplayed in many cases. What really seems to be occurring is fairly broad climate change, caused by multiple factors.
I just have a layman's knowledge of this, but some friends who are real geophysists have helped me understand some of it a lot better. What makes it hard to predict is that the rates of change in sea levels, ocean salinity, size of rain forests, and ground water supplies are happening faster than historic data show, which makes modeling more complicated.
Then you look at local weather. Winter here in the northeast has been much harder than usual. Colder and snowier. Is that "climate change?" Who knows? But a symptom of climate change is less stable and more violent weather. Recently there were tornadoes in Tennessee, not something you expect in mid-winter.
It may take a century for a lot of this to shake out, but I think we're in for some rough times as a growing population puts more stress on a planet that is changing. And whether that change is human caused, natural or both, we're going to have to deal with it one way or another.
What bugs me is that the people who say climate change is a crock have nothing but opinion and spotty info to back it up. Some point to some science that supports a narrow claim but ignore the larger range of data that show that things are happening.
