with a C900 base model, the best we could afford at the time. We could have gotten a Honda with A/C for the same money (about $11K) but my wife rode in a colleague's Accord and said it was no comparison to her boss's C900.
We had that thing far longer than we ever imagined: 19 years before we parked it in the side yard and another year before we donated it. Very reliable. A little quirky, but it never let us down.

My '96 9000, bought at age 7, is my favorite of all my cars, and my wife's '03 9-5 is a good ride as well. My eldest daughter has a '95 9000 --her first car-- and she loves Saabs.

So after 24 years we're aware Saabs are not perfect cars, but what is? Would I like a few less quirks and weirdnesses? Sure. But hanging out here makes the unexpected less likely. How much influence GM has had, I'm not really sure. The 9-5 still feels like a Saab to me. The 9-3 SS I drove recently felt a bit less "Saabish" but was still a car I'd consider owning. The ergonomics, at least to me, are the giveaway: I get in and fit immediately. Not the case in most cars I rent, which is often enough to appreciate the importance of a good fit. What I don't like about GM is their other cars. They are largely bland and boring, IMO. Saabs are not.

Judging from some posts here, I think a goodly number of people who have newer models are on their first or second Saab but are in "frequent new car mode" so they swap cars every 3-5 years. They come here because they *have* a Saab, not because they *care* about Saabs. They don't realize there is a Saab culture, just like there is one for BMWs or whatever. There aren't many Toyota Camry clubs. Many comments surround dealer service and warranty issues. That's the dealer and GM. But it could just as easily be Ford or some other company with a different badge on the grille. I also suspect some who complain a lot think an upscale European car is going to be like a Toyota or Honda but with some class, but find that they actually have to pay attention to maintenance. I suspect that the same comments can be found on the boards of Audi, Volvo and BMW owners who suddenly learn these cars actually have to be maintained.

We keep our Saabs because they work, they are durable, comfortable, safe, fun, practical, and we have a superb indy. And I can DIY a lot of stuff with reasonable confidence and have Saabnet to watch my six. The mix of Saabs at our house will change, and they may not be the only brand in the driveway, but there'll still be one around for a long time.
