The 2002-2005 9-5 and 2006+ 9-3 SportCombi are completely and entirely different cars. They share almost ZERO major parts except for badging, rivets and small plastic pieces, and... uh... the sound of the SID chime maybe.
My mother drives a 2002 9-5 wagon, I drive a 2006 9-3 SportCombi. I would say the 9-3 is the more sophisticated, advanced vehicle from a technological perspective, and more sure-footed and rewarding to drive. However it is smaller and the rear cargo area is more tapered by design.
Also keep in mind that the 9-3 (all bodystyles) has received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "gold" award as a top safety pick, with outstanding frontal, side, and rear crash test results. The 9-5 is indeed a safe car as well, but not rated as highly by the IIHS.
You must drive both and decided which you prefer. They are too different for our opinions to weigh heavily on your decision!
