IMHO, people bought fat SUVs because the vehicles were so heavily marketed, and because there were domestic choices for carrying stuff other than minivans. Management was greedy, didn't have the foresight to see that things would change and ignored reality. Too much MBA thinking, and not enough practical thinking. The Japanese have eaten GM/Ford/Chrylser's lunch for nearly 40 years. If it wasn't for the huge impact on millions of people I'd just say let them all fail. They deserve it, even though they are actually producing some decent cars now.
What could make a lot of sense would be to dissolve the company. Fire all the upper execs. Then the middle management who have reached their level of incompetence. No golden parachutes. Reduce the number of makes & models sold. Shrink the company.
Restart under new management that realizes the old ways don't work. Create a lean company. Build cars without UAW involvement. Match the Japanese manufacturers for wages & bennies. If ex-UAW guys want to work, fine, but no union to hold the companies hostage. Unions were needed once but have outlived their usefulness and in the case of the UAW, have become a enormous burden.
