They began long ago --in the '70s-- by continuing to build cars of lower quality than the Japanese who were taking market share with superior products. Also by never-ever standing up to the UAW, or at least building a relationship with the union that was something other than adversarial.
Management is largely to blame for only managing, not leading the company. The UAW owns it's share of the problem, too. Now they all need to figure out how to survive. If history is any indication, I don't think they can do it.
This ain't gonna be pretty, even if the feds bail them out.
