One thing the government and unions could do to help, is get rid of the "two fleet rule". This makes it difficult and more expensive to import the smaller cars that are selling now. In the long run this will decrease the number of cars made by the native domestics and their unions. Many unionized industries have gone by the wayside in the last 50 years, this maybe this is crowning glory of it all. Trying to save them now, with cash, will just cost taxpayers more and delay the fall. Loosening goverment regulations and union rules would allow the domestics more options for finding their way out of this.
