I think the best strategy depends on where you live and what your family fleet consists of.
We have two Saab 9-5s and a Honda CR-V with AWD. One Saab has snows on Saab wheels and pretty much plows through most white stuff with ease. The owner of the other Saab insisted on performance tires, and has lived with them long enough to reconsider the choice. The Honda still has its original Bridgestones and, with the awd, hardly misses a beat navigating the snowy New England countryside.
Basically, in the winter, we match the vehicle to the condition of the pavement.
I've found that a problem with multiple sets of tires is storage. They take up space if you do it with more than one car.
If some unfortunate event caused me to part with my beloved '99 9-5, I'd prolly get a set of aggressive snows on rims for the Honda (at least until I found a replacement 9-5).
