Two possible strategies. A set of good all-seasons with good rain traction for the summer, long wear to justify the cost, and decent snow/ice traction for the occasions when it is necessary would be fine for most people, especially if you can avoid driving when conditions are particularly bad. My wife has good all-seasons on her car, and we just keep her car parked if there's freezing rain or deep snow.
That said, I agree with the two-sets setup for at least one car in a family so that you have something that keeps you as safe as possible if you do need to drive in bad conditions. For my 2000 9-3, I have a set of summer tires (Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval) and a set of winters (Blizzak WS-60) on separate rims.
In your case, I would NOT recommend the WS-60s; I bought them because we like to drive up to northern Vermont a few times a winter to go skiing, and I am often driving on snowpack when we go (we go when it snows). The tradeoff is that they are not very good on dry pavement, so if you see only a little snow, you will be safer overall with a tire designed more for dry pavement.
I'd recommend either the Nokian WR or a tire classified as "performance winter" on tirerack, or even an all-season with top winter performance. Remember, good handling is a safety feature; don't sacrifice it for traction in conditions you may never face.
