I live in north central Massachusetts and grew up in Minnesota. I believe in two sets of tires (on rims) and have them for our Saab 9000 and 9-5. Nokian snow tires are the best and I have used them for more than 25 years. Necessity required me to drive Nokian NRW tires year round on a back up Saab and I concur with those who have commented that if you go with one set, Nokian WRs (successor to NRWs) do well winter and summer, with pretty good summer performance. Nokians seem to wear well and performance does not seem to degrade much over the tread life, unlike some summer "performance" tires I've owned. Remember that most of the time you will be driving in conditions that will not require extreme winter tires so you want the good dry and wet handling that Nokians deliver.
