I just recently bought new tires for my 07 9-3. Here is what I learned...
there are only a handful of tires that are designed for the 9-3. I to looked at Tirerack and found lots of tires for my car as far as size, but what I didn't realize is that only a few tires meet the required "load index" for my car. My 07 takes a 215/55/R16 97H. I knew what all those numbers ment except for the 97 part. That is the load index. Many tires at places like TireRack have a 93 or 94 Load Index for the size I was looking for. The difference in load can be as much as 200lbs per tire, that's 800+ lbs reduction in load carrying capacity for the entire car. I was advised by a local tire dealer in my town that any reputable tire dealer will never let you out of their store with a tire that doesn't meet or exceed that load capacity. Armed with this new found knowledge I discovered that there are far fewer tires to choose from with a 97 rating or higher. I ended up with a set of Michelin MXM4's, I live in the Buffalo area so I will have to see how they are in snow. I will report back in once we get some snow here.
