I didn't suggest that Scott visit to the hospital was due to a resident error....I was wondering if he saw any residents that looked like they were about to drop on the floor from tiredness.
As for your arguments, when you say the FEW hospitals have resident training programs, I don't know what you mean by few, but I believe that you would be surprised how many do...You are mistaken by thinking that you would only find residents at academic institutions, residents happen to also work in private institutions because they are cheap....so, after they have had their week's worth of work, they go to "moonlight" at a private institution....
2) when you say that errors are less at academic institutions, doesn't relate directly with the sleep or lack thereof of the residents. Academic institutions have the most up-to-date information of how to take care of someone, and the residents have supervisors checking their decisions. There are no statistics of how many mistakes are catched before they become issues.
3) I don't know what you are referring to, but the literature I know points to more sleep = better decision making from doctors
5) Less hours, equals less training, we agree on that, but more hours doesn't equal "better" training. when you are listening to something, and you are half asleep, how much are you really retaining? I believe this to be an argument of quantity Vs quality....I always take quality.....
