"Once could argue that they chose the profession and just because they're highly trained doesn't mean they are owed a higher salary or money to compensate their delayed lives"

More training does not equal more pay? What do you mean by that? why bother going to grad school then? So, in your opinion is acceptable that a resident makes as much (or less than) a server at TGIF?

Even though I would like to continue this discussion, the original post was about the amount of hours that residents work, and it was to inform people that when they go to a hospital, the person making decisions about their care may not be "all there"

I do need to say, I am an Engineer, and although it is a difficult career to study for, it is not the most difficult thing out there. That depends on the person, while I would get perfect grades in the math and physics classes, the literature and biology demanded more of me for a passing grade...So, it depends on your talents, comparing the two in a plane field is comparing apples and oranges.

I am not sure that you know what goes into becoming an MD, but here it is....
Undergrad 4 years
Grad school 3-4 years (not necessary, but work experience in related field is a must to get into med school)
Medical school 4 years
residency 3-6 years

People that have 4 kids making 20K/year are NOT good decision makers.....and this is not a "poor me" thread, off course that there are less fortunate people out there, that was my father 50 years ago, he studied and became someone and didn't have kids until he could afford them....So, now that he is someone he should be "happy" with whatever he gets paid to do his job because he had it so much worse before?
