If a state, like Wisconsin, has a patient's compensation fund, you can get it for $9K/yr. If you do obstetrics (many FP's do), probably more like $25K. Obstetrics coverage is big time expensive. I know that in some states without any kind of backup fund, obstetricians couldn't practice.

Malpractice insurance is really only felt by docs in small or solo practices. I just got a bill for my last installment of 2008 today. Yee-ha. At big universities, often the institution will self-insure, and the doc has no idea how much it costs.
