I agree that GM was clueless about what to do with Saab or what Saab buyers valued. But we could say that about many GM offerings. It's a case study in management incompetence.
Careful about blaming the GM factory workers, though. Take a step back. GM management signed those fat contracts and agreed to the infamous job bank, the medical benefits and retirement plans. They (the suits) also thought they needed corporate jets and golf courses. If the union was in charge, as I often hear, it was because GM management ceded control to them.
The workers see that the suits who count the beans are treating themselves quite well, so the feeling of entitlement just sweeps through the corporation. Actually, in this case, it filtered from the top floor down. It's very hard to uproot this evil weed, and, for that reason, I would favor bankruptcy over bailout for GM.
My .02 is that if you find people at low levels of the food chain who have a Deserve-All-I-Can-Get POV, you can generally assume they've learned it somewhere.
The worst thing that's happened to management in general, I think, is that it's become identified with a type of grandiose style -- an expensive wardrobe, Dilbertesque management jargon and hyperbole, silly dithering and Leadershipt Training.
As I said, GM is a case study in management incompetence.
