The old VWs were pretty good for their time, IMHO. Having had a '68 and a '70 that were autocrossed, driven in rallies and were my daily drivers year 'round for about 6 years, I found them pretty good in most snow conditions. Yes, the fronts weren't always what you might have liked, but there were some techniques that made up for the lack of preciseness. The handbrake and deliberately breaking the rear loose and adding power come to mind. I always meant to have 4 snows on, but never managed it. My tools usually lived in the front trunk in those days, so I had an extra 50 or so pounds up there which may have helped! I remember going out the 2 mile unplowed dirt driveway at my girlfriend's house in the Berkshires one night through about 15" of fresh dry powder, the snow breaking over the headlights. No issues, but if it had been wetter snow it wouldn't have been as much fun!
Lack of heat was a big issue, though, especially the winter I spent in Lake Placid when the high of the day might be -20 F.
