Sucess in any company or field, in a large or small environment, depends on knowing what you are responsible for. What are the goals/targets/limits of responsibility of your position? You should know what the job description for your position should be. Smaller entreprenuerial outfits usually avoid such protocols, thus a well intended employee can become the goat for an error on a project or assignment that upper management should have assigned to another position, because he is in over his head.
Worse, if coworkers realize you will be easily pushed in many situations due to your sincere desire to help out, they will start leaving the tough ones for you. If you prefer process oriented assignments rather than crisis solving, you will be less likely to be successful, and earn a reputation as a guy that can't get it done.
I took the Myers Briggs test and was then critisized in my company for having very little emotional content in my decision making (hey, I thought you said there were no wrong answers?). The balance of my group had high levels of emotion in thier decision making; which made sense as they were very disfuncional and I was not. As a result, the more critical work always fell to me. But not the reward/recognition. I left when I realized what the problem was, thanks to the company required Myers Briggs test to find out why we had so much disfunction!
You should also try the Winslow Profiles Assessment. They give a free short version on their website.
