A little input... Posted by Clay McNeely [Email] (#497) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Clay McNeely) on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 10:24:14 In Reply to: Need a 4x4 and imput, No Snaab, Wed, 10 Jun 2009 09:58:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've never owned a Subaru, but they seem to have a very loyal following. I test-drove a Subaru Tribeca a couple of months ago. It was pretty boring and I wasn't a huge fan of the interior layout and materials. The seats were pretty nice...it just didn't get much enthusiasm from me. I guess it kind of depends if you need true 4x4 or all-wheel-drive.
No experience with Jeep, either. I would personally have a VERY difficult time purchasing a Jeep...especially used. They seem to be driven hard (I know that's a very stereotypical blanket statement) and I would certainly question their reliability based on the past experience of others.
The Discovery is actually a Land Rover. Range Rover is another Land Rover model. I drove a Discovery a number of years ago and absolutely LOVED it. It was just different than every other cookie-cutter SUV you see out there. Reliability issues would take the Land Rover off my list, though. I would imagine the cost of ownership is pretty high. But they are cool.
I'm a pretty big Nissan fan, so my suggestion would be a Frontier, Titan, Pathfinder, X-Terra, or Armada. The Armada is a bit bulky and probably not a true off-roader. I've taken my Titan off-road quite a bit and it performs very well. I am amazed at the quality, reliability, fit-and-finish, and materials used on my Titan. I don't have a single complaint or issue with it. I've been in a loaner Frontier the past few days and it's a really fun pickup. I would imagine the X-Terra and Pathfinder are quite similar. Nissan would certainly get my vote.
Toyota and Honda have comparable offerings. Toyota seats are invariably the worst things you will ever sit on. Toyota, Nissan, and Honda all have pretty great reliability ratings. I don't think I've ever even driven a Honda, but comparing Toyota and Nissan (cars, pickups, SUVs, etc.), I would definitely say that Nissan takes the cake. I know there are die-hard loyalists on both sides of that fence, though.
Volvo might be another option if you are just looking for all-wheel-drive capabilities...or even the newest AWD addition to Saab. I am not a fan of domestic makes in the least. I've given Ford and GM a chance, but they have repeatedly failed and/or disappointed me more than I care to tolerate. It's been years since I've eyed a Chrysler/Dodge and really don't have any experience with them. They do look nice. Unfortunately, I think "looking nice" is what probably sells most vehicles.
Anyway, maybe that'll give you something to think about. Just figure out what your true needs are, how often you will have those needs, and do lots and lots of research. Needless to say, everybody will love something and hate something. Every car maker has a following and they also all have enemies. Good luck in your search, drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
