"Fun" is a relative term... Posted by Clay McNeely [Email] (#497) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Clay McNeely) on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 11:39:26 In Reply to: 4-door truck?, CWilson, Wed, 10 Jun 2009 11:14:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Is a 4-door pickup the same kind of fun as a Saab? Certainly not. But they can definitely have a fun factor. My Titan is fun in that you can do a whole lot in it, haul half the house in one load, and accept a few more "challenges" than you can in most other vehicles. The loaner Frontier I have right now is fun in that it zips around a lot like a car, has a good amount of get-up-and-go out of a fairly small engine, and you still have the utility of a pickup. I know, it's not the same as a Saab...but "fun" is still there in some respect of the word.
My Titan is 4-door and is cavernous inside. I can easily haul 5 fully-grown 6'+ adults in complete comfort. The Frontier is a lot more limited size-wise, but those back two doors are a lot more functional and accommodating than they look. FWIW...the Armada is like a living room on wheels. I did a side-by-side comparison of rear-seat legroom between an Armada and a Suburban/Tahoe and you could easily put twice as many illegal aliens in the floorboard of the Armada...really unbelievable when you look at it in person. Necessary? Maybe not. A true luxury for a 6'4" passenger like myself on a long road-trip with kiddos...absolutely.
Another thought if you're in the AWD market is the Infiniti FX35. I drove one quite a bit a couple months ago and it is an absolute blast. It felt like a sports car on steroids. Rear legroom and cargo room was a little compromised due to the overall shape of the vehicle, but it will definitely be on my shopping list when my wife is due for a new(er) vehicle. The 2009 FX35 is a new design, but I found a wide selection of 2008 models with less than 30,000 miles for anywhere between $25,000 and $30,000. Go back another year or two, tack on a few miles, and they start to get just plain inexpensive. Comparing a FX35 to a CRV is an apple/orange situation, but something else to think about. Drive safely and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
