Things I'd look for:
You need a robust four wheel drive or awd system. Do some research. Some are horrible. You've probably seen some awd stuck because it's terrible system just can't figure out how to properly send power to the one wheel with traction. Most folks don't realize that these system can be completely different. Just think limited slip versus open differential like Saabs have... then apply that theory to all four corners.
I personally like the Land Rover system which also gives the driver a lot of control.. low range, locked, hill decent, etc. My wife's Acura MDX is also a pretty good system, but lacks a low range and clearance for off-road use. Since you are looking for more of commuter, I'd look for a robust driver aid system too; one that does brakes, controls the transfer case, and applies the power. These too are much more sophisticated than just anti-lock brakes and traction control you'll find on the cheaper SUV's. Very handy with steep decents and twisting roads.
I would look at an SUV if you are in an area where the road crews may not clear the snow in a timely fashion. You'll want clearance the SUV offers, and might even poke around under the car to see what kind of clearance it has... just because the suv is tall, doesn't mean it has any clearance.
I'd keep the Saab for my normal commuter and get a Jeep Wrangler or something cheap and fun for bad days and four-wheeling. It's pretty much how I handle it; My daily is a '08 M3 (was a '00 Viggen before). Bad day car/ wheeling fun is a '80 IH Scout II. Then I also have a '71 Datsun 240z for fun, and a '73 Land Rover 88 Series III as a project car. My wife gets along fine in her Acura MDX, but I just can't drive a SUV every day.
