We had an Exploder for about 7 years --from 25K to 136K-- and other than needing tranny at 77K it was a pretty painless vehicle to own. The tranny was the downside and is probably not typical, just luck of the draw.

We live in NH and it never got stuck and started up just fine, even on a 7% grade on ice from a dead stop. Our driveway can be treacherous in winter and people tend to slide off it, and it pulled many of them in FWD cars out of the snowbanks. We had the nice seats and it was a comfy long road car, too. Got 15-16 mpg local, about 19 highway. Not terrible for a 4200+ truck. Ours had the system where you manually switch it to AWD. When in that mode it is still RWD until it senses the rears don't have traction and the fronts come in. Worked great. Also had a fairly good 4WD low range.

I've driven an Escape but not in bad weather. I think they're decent, too, but seemed kinda bouncy as I recall.

The nice thing about a Ford is you can get it fixed anywhere and parts are pretty reasonable.
