Bicycle Upgrade Time

I covet the newish brake-lever shifters, which means it's time to do something about my skinny tire. I just wanted to hear some thought from you other cyclists.
For $500 I could upgrade my 20 year old Cannondale Criterium which has a full set of 105 components. This is the least expensive way to go, but I still have an old bike which is reputed to have one of the least forgiving aluminum frames ever designed(though I must say I never noticed an excessive harshness). Still, she's the old bike I've enjoyed riding for 20 years.
Maybe it's time for new? For $1200 I could buy a new bike essentially the same as my old one, except with a ton of tweaks and improvements. Smoother ride, newer components, probably lighter. A definite improvement, but maybe not worth the money.
Or maybe my 57 year old bones deserve a softer ride? Some nice carbons and carbon mix frames out there for $2000-2500. Supposed to be smooth and slick, but are they more prone to frame problems?
I don't know; just mulling options. You have comments, I'd love to hear them.
