I'm not a road bike expert. That said, one of my mountain bikes is carbon + it's lasted pretty well considering it's the same year as my C900 (1993). It has been raced + jumped + crashed many many times. Worst problem is top tube is getting chipped by handlebars in crashes. I don't race it any more, but it is still an awesome bike to ride!
I wouldn't think twice about getting a carbon road bike in terms of durability. Mountain is another matter (need to wrap chainstays to avoid gouging on rocks)... though after racing a borrowed Ibis Mojo once, it sure is tempting!
That said, I also agree with JMJ: Steel is real! I have friends who find old high end Italian steel road bikes for next to nothing, strip, powder coat, + put on new components and while they won't win the Tour, they're darn nice rides + cheap!
