So far those chips are cosmetic... they've been there for many years + through many races... this bike has taken a beating! But I have taken steps to avoid chips + I have checked that the fibre itself isn't broken, that it's surface epoxy damage + I've recoated it in epoxy... not perfect I know, but good so far... and as I said, I'm not racing it anymore either, so that does say something about my confidence in it now!
Road frames might be thinner to get lighter + that may be an issue... but ultimately, in principle, composites enable better control of stiffness + overall frame performance than metals... not that everyone needs that...
(aluminum frames also fail catastrophically with little warning! hence steel is real!)
