Hi,
I wouldn't waste the time/money upgrading your cannondale. I would make that into a commuter/city bike or something like that, something for running errands on, etc, it just isn't worth the time or money upgrading a bike that old.
I've tried quite a few bikes as I was going through my most recent purchase. I ended up with a full carbon Eddy Merckx SXM, but that is more of a race bike. I tried quite a few bikes that had carbon seatstays only, with aluminium frames, and those were pretty comfy, as the carbon helps absorb the bumps in the back.
Just about every decent road bike has a carbon fork on it now.
The best thing for you to do, try to demo some different bikes, frame materials, etc, and see which one you feel best on and which is most comfortable for you.
Then, you just need to decide your budget, what you want to do with the bike (just ride, or ride and race, tour, short 20 mile rides, or long 100 mile rides) etc. and get a bike that suits your needs the best.
The integrated shifters/brakes makes a huge difference and is much, much, much better than having the old downtube shifters.
The only problem, summer is probably the worst time to buy a new road bike since this is the "hot" season for bike sales.
