OT: Grouted vinyl floors Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 1 Jul 2009 04:03:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We are in the process of selecting new floor coverings for the entire first floor of our home. Some rooms are easy - the LR and FR will get carpet. The DR is a little harder - carpet, wood, or laminate. The floor covering which comprises the entrance hall, kitchen, side hall, and half bath is a real dilemma!
We love the look of ceramic/porcelain tile, but noise, coldness on feet in winter, hardness on feet while working in the kitchen, added weight, complexity of installation in an occupied home, etc., all make this a difficult selection.
Both wood and laminate share some of the problems of the ceramic tile (noise, hardness) and add another problem of poor water resistance. Even though all noticed spills get wiped up immediately, unnoticed spills as well as ocassional dripping condensation from the toilet tank in summer may cause problems.
We have had sheet vinyl for 25 years and would like a change. In addition, our son's Shiba Inu spends quite a bit of time with us. Shibas are 30 pounds of muscle and toe nails and our old vinyl floor shows the affect.
Yesterday we discovered heavy weight (3/16 inch thick) vinyl tiles which are glued to the floor, either butted together or separated by a special vinyl grout. When grouted they look like porcelain tiles, but eliminate the noise, coldness, and hardness problems. Two manufacturers are Stainmaster Luxury Tiles and Mannington Adura tiles. Both products are sold with a 20 year guarantee which should be reassuring, but they are also a relatively new development.
Internet opinions are polarized. Some owners of these flors state they have had no scratching in years of use, including lots of children and dog traffic. While others claim the floors are irreparably scratched in a few days! The most detailed reviews, and the only ones with photos, come from happy owners.
Once again, I am asking the intelligent Saabnet community to relate their experience with these products before we make what could be an expensive mistake.
Thanks,
