Right, Don. Oak is definitely a hardwood and extremely durable and refinishes well, no matter its age. Most of our floors are 43 years old and you can't tell where the new oak in the kitchen starts and the old oak in the family room leaves off.
Sure, oak can dent if something heavy lands on it, and it's possible to scratch it through the finish. But most damage can be sanded out. Try that with a laminate.
