No experience with grouted vinyl, but in general my experience with vinyl (especially with dogs) has not been positive. I will second the suggestion to look at modern linoleum (eg Marmoleum). The other thing you might look at (if you like the look) is cork. Goes together like laminate, soft to walk on, can be used in kitchens (we know someone who did this). I've also seen photos of cork done like tile with fine grout lines - almost had a marble look to it.
From my perspective, it depends a bit on the age of the house (ours is >100 years). In an old house (eg pre-ww2), I'd stick with more traditional materials - hardwood, tile etc... modern materials, while nice, can look out of place (especially 20 years in). As noted previously, there are in-floor electric radiant systems you can install before tile which will keep it warm, but it will still be a hard surface to walk on (or drop dishes on). With quality tile + a good subfloor + installation, it is practically indestructible!
