play with them -wash them with comet, rubbing a bit, work them over with different things and see what they look like. Try the fingernail test, see if the mark stays. Drag a piece of wood over them hard, like a table being dragged.. Ceramic won't show any of those things, and as others have said, will keep the temp of the room unless on a slab. The thickness of the vinyl will save it from wearing thru too soon, but it will show the erosion as it goes down..You can sand hardwood and bring it back to new, and ceramic will never go bad, except maybe in 40 years. If you can afford electric radiant (water is more complex) it will heat the room and stay cool enough to keep your feet comfortable but not too hot.
