I'm a big fan of wood floors myself and have had them in kitchens and baths but never seen an issue. The only thing I've ever seen happen was at my parent's place when I was a stupid kid. I went to them a favor and wash the dishes and run the dishwasher...couldn't find any dishwasher stuff so I looked at the bottle of Palmolive or whatever. No where did it say NOT to use in automatic dishwashers, so I thought it would be safe. :)
Welp...the thing overflowed, bubbles and water everywhere, soaked the floor which was oak and about 50 years old. Buckled the heck out of it, but once it fully dried a week later, you couldn't tell anything happened to the wood. Like I said, I was a stupid kid. :)
ANYWAY...if you go the wood route, I just did solid cherry in a room and my friend did his whole main floor in maple, all solid wood. We both got screaming deals at under $1.99/sq ft pre-finished.
Check out Lumber Liquidators for a place in your area. The always have a specials section and "bargain bin" with stuff like 80% off. Not saying they'll always have something at that price, but it's worth checking back and holding out because they eventually will. I would go with wood well before a laminate, but I also like wood more than tile...but that's me.
Good luck!
