There is no substitute
and...
Nothing else even comes close.
I always buy used and run cars a long time, so whether Koenigsegg manages to pull it off or not there's a reasonable chance I'll replace our current fleet with another used Saab. But if I had to go elsewhere...
To replace my 9K I'd look at 3-series BMWs, Mitubishi EVO or a Subaru (WRX or Outback Turbo) for my daily driver and I'd look at maybe a Toyota Venza or Mazda CX7 to replace my wife's 9-5. All would be bought used. The problem is I'd feel like a traitor buying a Japanese car after 40 years in Euro-cars.
If I wanted to spend money, I might look at the Caddy CTS in either sedan or wagon forms. The bigger Bimmers are too soft (M5 excepted, but they are silly expensive). Audis have too many service and reliability issues for realistic long term ownership. And Mercs are nice but ridiculously over priced. In most of the world Mercedes are taxi cabs, which says a lot.
If I went domestic I'd probably look at Fords. I like the Fusion and the Edge.
