Well, I've decided not to drive in the winter, so Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 14:51:31 In Reply to: Re: What parts will die sooner as a result of winter storag, jdlincoln [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 28 Nov 2009 11:10:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
driving is not an option. This is what I want to do for the car, avoid the salt. So, I have to store it. I've heard SO many different anecdotal advice. There has to be a right and wrong way. So many people told me that it's bad to start the car and let it idle until operating temp, as all you are doing is putting wear on the engine, especially in the winter. Just about as many people said you have to start it regularly and let it run. I've been doing the former, and have had no issues, just want to know which parts will "die" sooner as a result of them sitting around (like, the ac compressor, as an example). I get special humidity absorbing powder which I put in the garage, and our winters up in Canada are pretty dry; i get absolutely no rust on my rotors. I honestly have a bad feeling about starting it up and letting it idle for 30 minutes in very cold weather, I think that is seriously bad for the engine. As soon as I start my car, after about 15-30 seconds I drive off this way it will warm up faster, all the while driving it very very conservatively not pushing the engine (this is in the owner's manual)
There has to be a trade-off with everything. I don't drive it in the winter, so I avoid all of the salt, stone chips, dirty winterness etc at the expense of some parts wearing out sooner; those which I am trying to figure out.
Thanks,
Bender.
