The difference in fuel economy used to be much bigger because automatics used to have fewer gears (eg c900: 3 vs 5). Now they are about even. Depending on the car, and gearing + other things, sometimes the automatic is a hair better (at least EPA), but it's insignificant. Basically it comes down to the driver + their habits nowadays...

I don't mind the automatics that are in modern Saabs... the gear ratios are well chosen + the cars have lots of low end torque, so aside from the enjoyment of using stick + clutch, the cars work nicely... but in an Asian car with no low end torque + geared to make it fast off the line with great fuel numbers, something's gotta suffer + imho, the driving experience with those really is poo... random downshifting all the time on the highway + even around town... no fun at all... + while manumatic mode might improve the situation a little for those cars, it is also frustratingly not a stick... manumatic is totally not necessary in a Saab (imho)...
