I have been looking into this myself. I think you need to exercise caution when reading safety numbers. By now, all of the automakers have figured out how to game the system so that they get more stars on the various government tests-hence the higher ratings for some brands. Since Saab has not updated its cars recently, its cars don't do as well on the tests. But they are still safer IMHO. I put more faith in the actual accident statistics. When looking at accidents statistics, the best cars are still Saab and Volvos. There is a lot of really good info available at this website: http://www.carfax.com/car_safety/ratings/SRR.cfm
Look at the HLDI statistics there.
