this link has more details about the crash testing. Still not the one I was looking for but covers many of the same topics. A few key points from it:
"during the development of the latest Saab 9-3 product range no less than 75 different crash configurations were evaluated, only 15 of which were legally required. Many permutations of frontal, side and rear impacts at different speeds and angles are involved, including roll-overs. "
"Apart from using sleds with barriers and poles in the laboratory to replicate collisions with other vehicles and fixed objects, moving car-to-car, and even car-to-truck, impacts are staged."
The fact that a Saab owner (let alone the general public) hasn't heard about this stuff indicates a need for a bit better marketing.
IIHS testing is great as it raises the bar + makes all cars better. The unfortunate side effect is it gives greater credence to some to say, "it gets 5 out of 5 stars [on 1 or 2 tests], therefore it's perfect". Jeremy Clarkson said something about the 9-5 like "you have to dig deep to find out what's great about this car... but it's there alright", and that is very true...
