There was a great writeup from Saab, I think by their technical staff, on what they do, but I don't really have time right now to search the web for it. If I find it later I'll post a link. I have seen video footage of a 9-5 (old generation now) doing a roll test, and it had already clearly been used to do front end testing (the front end was smashed up). It rolls several times much like a brick would roll. Those cars are solid. I tried to search for it on youtube, but no luck. Sorry to not have more concrete references at my fingertips (and obviously not all is in the public domain), but suffice it to say, Saab goes out of their way to make the cars safe in all respects. To me, the introduction of SUV side impact testing (vs existing side impact testing) said a lot. 9-3 passed first try. 9-5 was very good too. Audi, Acura, BMW, everyone else either failed or held the current model back from testing until a new model (designed to pass the test) could be released. Mostly they all just solved it by adding side curtain airbags. Again, there used to be video on youtube of the 9000 getting whacked by a LandRover in the mid-90's.
